Sacrifice is a word we often hear in church, but what does it truly mean?
Sacrifice is giving up something precious or valuable for the sake of a greater purpose. It may be your time, your comfort, your finances, your talent, or even your personal desires. A true sacrifice costs something. If it costs nothing, it is not a sacrifice.
One important truth we learned during Sunday’s service is that God does not measure sacrifice by quantity but by quality. He is more interested in the heart behind the gift than the size of the gift itself.
Imagine two people giving an offering. One gives GH₵5,000 because he is wealthy and barely feels the impact. Another gives GH₵100, which is all she has left after paying her bills. To people, the larger amount may seem more impressive, but God sees the sacrifice behind the smaller gift. He looks at the heart, not the amount.
Hannah’s Sacrifice: Trusting God with Your Deepest Desire
1 Samuel 1:7–11
Hannah had one overwhelming desire—to have a child. Every year she went to the house of the Lord carrying the pain of being childless. Instead of becoming bitter or giving up on God, she poured out her heart in prayer and made an extraordinary promise: if God blessed her with a son, she would dedicate him back to the Lord.
Think about that for a moment. Hannah was willing to give back the very blessing she had prayed for.
Many of us tell God, “If You bless me with this job, this business, or this opportunity, I will serve You faithfully.” But once the blessing comes, we become too busy for God.
Hannah teaches us that true sacrifice means keeping our promises to God, even after He has answered our prayers.
The Widow of Zarephath: Obedience When It Doesn’t Make Sense
1 Kings 17:8–16
The widow had enough flour and oil for only one final meal. Humanly speaking, she needed to protect what little she had.
Yet Elijah asked her to prepare food for him first.
Imagine opening your wallet and finding your last GH₵50. Your child needs food, but God places someone in your path who genuinely needs help. Everything inside you says, “Hold on to it.” Faith says, “Trust God.”
The widow obeyed, and God multiplied what she had. Her flour and oil never ran out.
The miracle did not happen before her obedience—it happened because of her obedience.
Sometimes the greatest miracles begin where our comfort ends.
Sowing in Tears
Psalm 126:5–6
Life is not always easy. There are seasons when serving God requires sacrifice.
A student may wake up early to pray while others are sleeping.
A business owner may refuse dishonest money because of integrity.
A family may continue trusting God even during financial hardship.
These moments can feel painful, like sowing seeds with tears. Yet every farmer understands that before there is a harvest, there must first be planting.
God promises that those who sow faithfully will one day reap with joy.
Your present sacrifice may become tomorrow’s testimony.
Cornelius: The Sacrifice God Never Forgot
Acts 10:1–12
Cornelius was not known because he was wealthy or powerful. He became known because he loved God, prayed consistently, and generously helped others.
His giving and prayers rose before God as a memorial.
This reminds us that heaven keeps a record of every sincere act of obedience.
You may serve quietly without recognition.
You may give without anyone thanking you.
You may pray for your family every day without seeing immediate results.
People may overlook your faithfulness, but God never does.
At the appointed time, God honoured Cornelius by sending Peter with the message of salvation, changing the course of his entire household.
What Can We Learn Today?
Ask yourself:
What is God asking me to surrender?
Am I giving God my leftovers, or my best?
Do I obey God only when it is convenient?
Am I willing to trust Him even when I cannot see the outcome?
True sacrifice is not about losing something—it is about trusting the One who owns everything.
The Owner of sacrifice is God. Every genuine sacrifice made in faith reaches Him. He sees every prayer, every act of obedience, every offering, every hour of service, and every tear shed in faith.
If Hannah had refused to trust God, Samuel would never have become one of Israel’s greatest prophets.
If the widow had held on to her last meal, she would have missed God’s miraculous provision.
If Cornelius had stopped praying and giving, he might never have experienced God’s extraordinary visitation.
When we place our sacrifice in God’s hands, He has the power to turn our obedience into blessings, our tears into joy, and our faith into lasting testimonies.
